Who Will Save the Kindergarten? with Vivian Gussin Paley  •  Friday, April 27, 2012

Vivian says it’s time to reinvent the garden of children, and only teachers can come to the rescue!

The only early childhood professional to have won a MacArthur Fellowship Genius Grant, Vivian Gussin Paley is an expert on children’s stories, play, logic, and thinking. Using her 37 years of experience as a kindergarten teacher - primarily at the University of Chicago’s acclaimed Laboratory School - Vivian is ready to shed new light on how young children search for meaning in the social and moral landscapes of the classroom and to bring her story-telling/story acting and discussion techniques to you! Vivian, the author of 13 books about young children, believes that it is critical to find room for a variety of ways of playing, of using play, and of creating a more literate environment based on play - all while meeting academic standards. Her keynote will present lively and wonderful scenarios that describe how play and story acting can transform kindergarten by providing a bridge between play and learning. Vivian’s book, The Girl with the Brown Crayon, was honored by the Harvard University Press and earned the Warren Stone Prize as the outstanding book about education and society. Look for some of Vivian’s other books, like The Boy on the Beach and You Can’t Say You Can’t Play.
